Migration and mapping

Most implementers will map at their system boundary rather than change their internal database. Your schema can stay as it is; you translate to and from the standard when data crosses into or out of your system.

Mapping process

  1. Inventory. List the record types you hold that correspond to entities in the standard. Start with the core: strata corporation, strata lots, people and ownership.
  2. Field mapping. For each entity, map your columns to standard fields. Record transformations such as date formats, money as decimal strings and enumeration values.
  3. Identifiers. Decide how you will produce stable id values — usually your existing primary keys, converted to strings.
  4. Vocabularies. Map your status and type codes to the standard's controlled vocabularies. Where nothing fits, use the closest value plus detail in extensions, and tell us — that's a gap in the standard.
  5. Validate. Validate exported records against the schemas.
  6. Round-trip test. Import what you export and compare, to find lossy mappings.

Example mapping

A hypothetical legacy table and its mapping to StrataLot:

Legacy columnStandard fieldTransformation
lot_id (int)idConvert to string, for example "sl-" + lot_id
corp_idstrataCorporationIdSame identifier scheme as the corporation export
sl_nolotNumberInteger
pid ("000000012")parcelIdentifierInsert hyphens: 000-000-012
ueunitEntitlementNumber
type ("R"/"C")usageR → residential, C → nonResidential
unit_noUnit.unitNumberMoves to a separate Unit record

Migrating between platforms

When moving a strata corporation from one platform to another, export in dependency order so references can be resolved on import: StrataCorporation → StrataPlan → Building → StrataLot → Unit → Person / Organization → OwnershipInterest → governance, financial, maintenance and document records.

Moving data between platforms also involves consent, contracts and records obligations that are outside the scope of a data standard.

Migrating between versions of the standard

Each release in the changelog includes migration instructions for any changed or deprecated fields. See Versioning and compatibility.
